Catherine Connolly, a left-wing independent lawmaker, was elected president of Ireland in a landslide on Saturday for a term that lasts for seven years. Connolly, a member of Parliament since 2016, won 63 percent of the vote in defeating center-right former Cabinet minister Heather Humphreys. In Ireland, all executive power lies with the prime minister, so the role of president is more ceremonial. The president acts on the advice of the government but also consults an advisory Council of State in the exercise of certain functions. The president also signs and promulgates bills passed by the Oireachtas (Parliament), and, when so advised by the prime minister, summons and dissolves the Oireachtas.
Argentina’s majorityPres. Javier Milei received a vote of confidence in Argentina’s midterm elections on Sunday, as his La Libertad Avanza party picked up 14 seats in the Senate and 64 seats in the lower house. Milei, whose tenure has been marked by austerity measures, recently secured a $20 billion bailout for Argentina’s ailing economy from U.S. Pres. Donald Trump. This weekend’s election not only strengthened Milei’s legislative majority but also positioned him as a favorite for reelection in 2027.
